Nice rant Danni, im very impressed! :)
I have to agree that the dumping of half dead indoor plants in any available corner makes me feel nauseous, particularly if these neglected specimens are left in plastic containers and in the worst case scenarios they are overwatered and leave stains on the floor... *shudder*
However, ive seen some really nice products on the market, one in particular springs to mind from Zenith, that serve to bring the use of indoor plants into a contemporary and controlled environment. I hear you about how this could easily be dated but i think that stands as a risk for most interior decorations and as Bob mentioned it does take you a long way on getting your greenstar points.
So i sit on the fence but realise that if people are going to insist on bringing the outside in then perhaps i can help them do it with a little finesse!

The temptation to score some easy greenstar points by adding planting into the office design is too great. And the evidence as to the environmental benefit is empirical and untrustworth. But irrespective of this your design gains green kudos by using planting. I can agree with the intent behind the idea of introducing some nature into the otherwise orderly and controlled office space. Emotionally, the texture differential must be beneficial.
So in our next project design why don't we tether a horse to a photocopier? It might not get many green points but I bet it would be a great conversation piece.

Hi Evoke! Blog and website look great.
Thought I'd mention that i think I must have inherited some of the design genes too. (Although I'm not sure from where) Of late i have found myself really looking at some of the awful interior design in public buildings here in UK. I find myself thinking,,,,,I'm sure Bob and his team would have had antirely different concept for here........ Maybe its because of budgetry controls but some are just so trashy and uncomfortable and stale as regards design and style.
Regards and good luck

I find this interesting, and rather “on topic” for us as proponents of technologies often marketed with the green angle, specifically lighting control, BMS and on a different level, video conference.

The idea of efficient technologies appeal to most but the reality is that without a whole building mantra being laid down to dictate how every element of a building interacts, and assigning some form of policeman to govern the joining of these disparate system, my opinion is that we don’t collectively kick the green goal. Recent experience with major projects demonstrates that too many cooks in the kitchen will eventually ruin the broth. Meaning that as progressive tenancies come online and are governed by different parties, not necessarily with the ideals of the original building in tune, the green building vision becomes diluted to the point that the original goal is never fully realised.

Perhaps this is similar in vein to what you are suggesting from the design side, often the green angle is a fine marketing tool but people lose interest as the realities of the implementation kick in. Not to mention the costs.

We have the technology, we have the abilities, does the building community REALLY have the desire, that’s an unknown right now I feel, particularly in the recent economic climate.
