EVOKE has developed a step-by-step process to ensure our clients achieve fitout solutions which are completely in tune with their requirements. Over the many years we’ve been in practice, we’ve refined and resolved our processes to a management system which is second to none.

Here’s a little bit behind the ethos

We Consult
Built environments for businesses have become highly sophisticated systems, much like a living organism. They integrate attitude, technology, marketing savvy, imagery, functionality, comfort and space; they need to be able to react to the ever changing needs of your business; be places where your staff can work to their best; differentiate your business from your competitors’ and draw customers to you; play a role in attracting and retaining staff; demonstrate your brand and everything it stands for in a solid and highly visible form.

If your business is a store, a restaurant or a hotel you already know how important the appearance and functionality of your premises is to your customers. For office-based businesses, ensuring that your staff and visitors can interact safely and positively with the premises and with each other is just a given expectation. We can’t escape the fact that our premises is going to cost us, but how much better if, instead of being just an expense, the outlay translates into an efficiency-maximising or business-generating asset.

Melding all these influences, drivers and expectations into a premises design, no matter how brilliant your designer, doesn’t happen by instinct or creativity alone. It’s only by rigorous, methodical and systematic inquiry that your requirements and expectations are fully revealed; how a clear understanding is acquired of the things that are important to your organisation; how a realistic expectation of cost and time can be developed; and how we can best advise you about your premises. This is the framework around which a really exciting and lasting design can be built.

And It’s the core of EVOKE’s consulting approach. The spectacular design that we’ll Create and Construct for you is a direct descendant of the combined intelligence on all the project requirements. So we’ll listen to you, we’ll advise you, search out and discover with you all the important factors, consolidate and describe this in a comprehensive report.
If you feel that you’re unable to allocate the time necessary to participate at this level of detail then not to worry. We’ve a fast track, “shake & bake” version which leans on the consulting experience we’ve gained with previous projects. We’ll need to make some assumptions based on this experience and use some typical models we’ve developed but this will start the ball rolling. Then by preparing a layout plan we can review this with you and develop the design by iteration, based on your feedback to the layout. It’s an approach that is maybe less thorough and possibly less precise, but it gets to a very acceptable outcome with less of your time invested.

It may be that you’ve already thought out exactly how you want the project to turn out; or you might be feeling completely overwhelmed and not know how or where to start. Our clients come from both ends of this experience spectrum and also many places in between. Maybe a client is just beginning to look at possible new premises or perhaps they might be further into the cycle. Possibly they might be weighing up their options: should they stay and refurbish their existing accommodation or should they move. Though each may be looking for a design result which is unique to their business, they are all alike in one important factor: they want their designer to listen to them.

We Create
Whereas the Consulting and Construction phases of the project require quite rigorous management, the Create phase is all about the evolution of the design and requires a more gentle management touch.

To ensure that our clients have maximum opportunity to be involved with the design as it develops and to confirm with them that it’s progressing in accord with their wishes, we fragment the Create phase into three milestone stages: Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documentation. A milestone report is used to conclude each stage and this includes updates on timeframe and budget and advises on any new issues that might arise.

But other than this control system it’s important that the designer is allowed to Create in as uncluttered an environment as possible.

Maybe the layout plan is somewhat a more logical design process than any other part of the Create phase. Our focus on the layout plan is about efficient use of space, complying with the legion of Building Code requirements and maximising opportunities for fitout cost-minimisation. But without the overall design concept evolving alongside it, it remains two-dimensional and expressionless.

The spark of an idea, the flavour of a concept, the seed of a theme - these all germinate in the right side of the brain and, within the parameters of cost and time, our designer needs freedom to experiment and develop so that the best possible result is achieved for you.

Our approach to the design concept and the style is absolutely linked to the catalogue of information about your business that we’ve gathered in the Consult phase. It won’t be a style that can be named from some adjective-addicted journalist’s cheesy list of style catch words. It will be unique and defining, using elements, forms, colours and imagery which are directly aligned with the target audience and stemming entirely from your business brand.

For example, if we were designing a hair salon whose target market was genX middle to high income females then we might be looking at styling the fitout around the visual imagery that this demographic group bought into in their teenage, influencing years – so maybe themed in acid punk or new romantics imagery.

In a similar fashion, an accounting firm determined to attract and retain personnel with 2-3 years post grad/PY experience could be treated to a design concept which paid attention to the workplace aspirations of the 25-30 yo group – freedom of movement, flexibility, technology, social, eco-friendly. This might be materialized in a panoramic vista; egalitarian open-plan with great natural light percolating right through the interior; sparingly-applied vibrant colour and artworks; easily relocatable furniture; casual meeting/ recreation areas, equipped with multi channel AV and quality beverage facilities.

So the EVOKE approach doesn’t necessarily follow style; when We Create, we define style; a style which is unique for each client.

Today’s office building and fitout construction landscape is complicated, contractual and can be aggressively litigious. Whereas it used to be possible to rely on one’s commercial know-how and “do a deal”, nowadays, if the commercial deal is to be a success, in-depth technical knowledge about buildings is essential. We’ll arrange tendering and organise quotations for you so that you can be assured of the very best value – it’s all open, accountable and fair. We follow the Code of Practice for Building and Construction Industry in Western Australia, the standards prescribed by the Department of Treasury and Finance and, where appropriate adopt the Australian Standard Code of Tendering AS1420 -1994.
